Vitamin D3

d3 enVitamin D blood test (25-hydroxyvitamin D, calciferol)

The indicator reflecting the status of vitamin D in the body. 25(OH) D- the active metabolite of vitamin D in blood.

The two basic forms of 25(OH) D- cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2). D3 is formed mainly in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet rays while the source D2 is only food.

The level of 25(OH) D in the blood is considered the best indicator of the status of vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D deficiency is manifested by rickets, which is seen in children and osteomalacia (deficient bone mineralization). Manifestations of vitamin D deficiency are similar to manifestations of hyperparathyroidism which can develop secondarily.

Vitamin D toxicity can cause toxic effects (more often observed in children),which manifests depending on the dose and duration of application in hypercalcemia , hyperphosphatemia, soft tissue calcification, nausea, vomiting, constipation , anorexia, retardation of growth and development.

Preparation for the test: the blood test must be taken on an empty stomach. There must be at least 8 hours between last meal and taking the test. Taking of blood for test should be carried out before starting the medication (if possible) or not earlier than 1-2 weeks after their withdrawal.
